Managing Sweet 16

As a Project Manager I have been challenged with many situations, but nothing prepares a person for their daughter’s 16th birthday. I am not sure if it is the idea of her driving or the fact that there are boys out there just like I was when I was 16. This past weekend my wife and daughter decided it was time to plan the party and I was tasked with helping to plan.

I believe life is a project and in almost any situation project management methodologies can be applied. So I put together a plan. We had a date for the party, the mission statement (Sweet 16 Birthday) and I set to laying out everything that needs to be done and by when so that my daughter’s magical day will go flawless. I was ok when shopping for invitations, party favors and even food. What I was not prepared for was shopping for that special outfit. Fathers everywhere know what I am talking about. It is when we realize just how hypocritical we are as men. We enjoy looking at young women in skimpy clothes as long as our daughters are not one of those women.

It is this weekend of planning that made me realize how much life is like a project and how much my work can be applied to my life, and just like work, no matter how much planning and preparation there are still those little “gotcha’s” that catch you off guard. Just thought I would share this interesting tid-bit as my first posting to my new blog.
